Athlete of the Month: Davon Reed

Over the past three years, junior Davon Reed has raised the PDS basketball program to a new level. His 26 points and 11 rebounds in the season opener against the Solebury School clearly demonstrate his elite athletic ability. However, it is not impressive statistics alone that distinguish Reed. Rather, it is his attitude and leadership, that he brings to every practice and game, that make him an exceptional player.

Reed is a “selfless athlete,” said Varsity Boys Basketball Coach Paris McLean. “He radiates energy and gets the entire team excited and motivated to do their best.” According to longtime friend and teammate and PDS junior Tavante Brittingham, Reed has the ability to improve the people around him solely with his presence.

Reed’s unparalleled ability can be credited to his hard work and devotion to the sport. Reed plays basketball year round for an elite AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) Basketball Program called Team Final, which operates out of Philadelphia. Team Final has three players, one of whom is Reed, in the Top 75 of the ESPN 2013 recruiting class. Team Final has also sent many players to the NBA and has produced multiple successful college players.

In addition, Reed participates in a Nike sponsored league called the EYBL (Elite Youth Basketball League), which is only open to approximately 60 teams in the country.

When asked about the coming basketball season, Reed said, “The hard work has already been put in, now everybody just needs to watch out!” Reed and the varsity basketball team have already begun to prove themselves. They recently returned from a very dominant performance in the Solebury season tip-off tournament, defeating archrival Pennington by 20 points in the final game. Reed was named MVP of this tournament.

Coach McLean explained that Reed “has already received 12 Division 1 scholarship offers. Everything is still wide open in terms of his recruitment. I think by the end of this season and into the summer he could be up to about 15. The tough part is that college recruiting is a business.”

Coach McLean is right. College recruiting is a business and this may be why Reed is trying to focus on the present and take things as they come. “Right now it’s about high school, then it’s going to be about college, and then maybe even the NBA. But right now I just want to take it one step at a time,” said Reed.

The Varsity Boys’ Basketball team has a lot of talent and the prospects appear endless for them this season. Coach McLean concluded, “We are all excited to see what is coming next with this ever improving team and the always dynamic Davon Reed.”
